uninstall / re-install virtualmin

Hi,

Well i seem to have completely hosed a system and need to re-install virtualmin. What is the proper procedure to do so? (I think migrated cpanel accounts caused some problems and now i cannot get anything to work properly) Somehow i missed setting up Bind before migrating accounts so now i cannot get the resolv.conf to stick, bind to run, and other dns issues..

Thank you.

A re-install is pretty drastic .. are you sure you want to do that?

One way would be to backup any domains you want to keep, re-install the OS, re-install Virtualmin, then restore from your backups.

Well that's not really the preferred route - I already have backups of all domains.. I cannot seem to figure the best way to correct this though, but if i have to do an OS re-install that would be a problem now... (not onsite) What would you suggest to do to fix??

Thx

Could you post or attach the contents of that file /var/named/scottkappler.com.hosts from the BIND error ?

Well not any longer - i actually deleted all but one domain for now (the one to be used for dns) BIND now starts but i have not gone any farther than this yet... I am not sure if something is still lingering as The strange thing is at godaddy when i try to add the nameservers (ns1/ns2.neweffectit.net) to the neweffectit.net domain it gives a "Nameserver not registered" error. (this server is supposed to be the nameserver)

Not sure what i should do / check anything at this point?

Thanks

You may need to add those hosts at godaddy first .. they probably have a different section in their control panel for adding a "glue record" host with an IP address.

Yes, i am aware of the settings at Godaddy. The hosts are all "supposedly" correctly set-up. They are saying it is the (this) server... What is even stranger is if i do a test from http://network-tools.com on the IP i get this:

IP address: 98.142.218.15
Host name: host01.neweffectit.com
98.142.218.15 is from United States(US) in region North America

Any thoughts on what to do now? I am calling godaddy too to be sure their system isn't messing something up.. or is not accurate.. Thanks a lot!

Update: godaddy was screwed up - we had to delete and re-create the hosts. For future reference if you create a host at godaddy and their systems are performing updates or maintenance at the same time it will tell you that your changes are saved but they are really not... this is apparently what occurred..

However, i still have this .com hostname thing... did i miss updating a file somewhere? it is centos6.2

Thanks a lot.

Which page are you seeing the .com hostname on?

That is what appears from outside - ie. http://network-tools.com and enter the domain or ip to run a check it returns with: 98.142.218.15 host01.neweffectit.com

Same result from dnsstuff and others... (if you look at the post #7 above in the first box you will see the tracert that shows it) Thx

That's a reverse DNS lookup result ... you'd have to ask your ISP or hosting company to change it. It isn't under godaddy's control at all.

ha! wow, how did i miss that... i think i've been in front of this computer too long... I am my own host so i control RDNS... and you were right - i must have mistyped it..

Well i am officially done for the night. I will start trying to reupload domains tomorrow - Thanks for your help..
