I also ran yum manually per Eric's post in forum for similar issue, no help though..

Thanks

Nothing to do

There's a log mentioned in the output you shared, "/root/virtualmin-install.log", can you attach that to this request? That may contain more information regarding what's going on.

Also, if you run the command "yum update", do you get any errors, or does it complete successfully?

Yes, yum update updated everything successfully...

Wait - i just tried again and it worked and completed successfully.

I see the problem - i was originally trying to install pro and it looks like the license was rejected (until i completed downgrading the old server to gpl )

It seems to be ok now..

We are good - Sorry, my bad!

The status of your system is being checked to ensure that all enabled features are available, that the mail server is properly configured, and that quotas are active .. Your system has 23.46 GB of memory, which is at or above the Virtualmin recommended minimum of 256 MB. BIND DNS server is installed, and the system is configured to use it.

Mail server Postfix is installed and configured.

Apache is installed.

Webalizer is installed.

Apache is configured to host SSL websites.

MySQL is installed and running.

ProFTPd is installed.

Logrotate is installed.

SpamAssassin and Procmail are installed and configured for use.

ClamAV is installed and running.

Plugin DAV Login is installed OK.

Plugin AWstats reporting is installed OK.

Plugin Mailman is installed OK.

Plugin Protected web directories is installed OK.

Using network interface eth0 for virtual IPs.

IPv6 addresses are available, using interface eth0.

Default IP address for virtual servers is 98.142.218.15.

Default IP address is set to 98.142.218.15, which matches the detected external address.

Both user and group quotas are enabled for home and email directories.

All commands needed to create and restore backups are installed.

The selected package management and update systems are installed OK.

.. your system is ready for use by Virtualmin. Updating all Webmin users with new settings.. .. done

Updating status collection job .. .. done

Re-loading Webmin .. .. done

Although - now i am getting

.. a problem was detected : Your serial number is licensed for only 1 servers, but is being used on 3.

The one server was downgraded to gpl. the new one is replacing it completely. Is this an update needed on your end?

Thx.

Well, it should allow you to install your Virtualmin license on two systems -- as that's somethings it would allow in the case of a backup or hot spare.

Perhaps another problem occurred, such as a temporary network issue, or maybe one of the repositories was having a problem.

In regards to the warning you're seeing now -- that'll go away after a few days. Once the Virtualmin license manager no longer sees Virtualmin installed on a given IP address, it'll clear out after a few days.

OK great - thanks a lot.

Quick question - I restoring the domains from backups now. after it is complete i want to change the main server IP to what it was prior. is there a way to do this in vmin or do i just need to do it via command line in centos? Thx.

You would need to do two things; you'd first need to change the server's IP. You'd then need to change the IP that your various Virtual Servers are using.

To change your server's IP, you can go into Webmin -> Networking -> Network Interfaces, and change the IP(s) you see in there.

To change the IP's your various Virtual Servers are using, you can go into Virtualmin -> Addresses and Networking -> Change IP Addresses.

ahh, sweet. thats great.. i looked everywhere BUT there apparently.. :)

The most confusing part about vmin / webmin is just that. its like it is two separate systems.. i'm used to cpanel so it is hard to remember where things are at.. getting there though..

Thanks again..!

Scott

Hey again,

I am not sure what is going on... but i have a problem with this new box. The new server is crawling when delivering webpages. (only one website with wordpress on it now) I dont see any apache errors or ddos attacks or anything like that... BUT - What I do see is the # of processes running is 431!

I have another server also running pro and one with gpl - they both have the same CentOS 6.2 and the latest 3.89 vmin setup.. those servers are only running 148 processes on one and 150 processes on the other... These both run great..

Also, for reference this server has two quad-core procs and 24GB of RAM with 10000rpm HDDs..

I restored this domain from a backup from the old box.. if this matters.? Here are some logs if they help...

Any ideas? Thanks.. (and i thought i was done! argh..)

Well, it's difficult to determine the problem from your log files, but you could run these commands, and post the output here:

  1. uptime

  2. free -m

  3. mailq | tail -1

  4. ps auxw (and then, for this one, rather than pasting the output, you could attach it as a file to this request)

Sure, no problem at all. This is my critical box too so I appreciate it very much. I owe you a few beers.. :) at least!

Hmm, well, I unfortunately don't see anything unusual there. You've got lots of free RAM, your system's load average is low meaning you have plenty of available CPU and disk IO, and the processes running there all look normal -- you do have a lot of kernel processes running, but that's okay, I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Sometimes, slow response is due to a lot of email in the mail queue, but you don't have any messages in your mail queue.

That likely means the problem is related to your specific application.

I see a lot a few errors along the lines of "read data timeout in 31 seconds" in your Apache error logs above -- that may mean your web application is taking longer than 31 seconds to complete.

I'm not sure why that would be the case, but that may be a place to look -- trying to troubleshoot your application.

You could always go into Server Configuration -> Website Options, and set the PHP Execution Mode to "CGI", just to rule out a problem with FCGID.

You could also try creating a file in your public_html directory named "test.php", with the following contents:

<div class="codeblock"><pre><code><span style="color: #000000"><span style="color: #0000BB">&lt;?php<br />&nbsp;phpinfo</span><span style="color: #007700">(); <br /></span><span style="color: #0000BB">?&gt;</span></span></code></pre></div>

And then the question is, does that test.php file load quickly? Or does it take a long time to load?

OK, this is strange. I will do the things you suggested and let you know.

I did just try to re-install the wordpress through its auto update in the dashboard. It always works but this time i got an resolve error.

Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.3.1-no-content.zip… Download failed.: Couldn't resolve host 'wordpress.org' Installation Failed

So then i looked at the dns and host. I dont know...? I thought something had to be in hosts file?

Thanks!

Not being able to resolve domain names suggests that your nameservers may not be setup correctly... those are in /etc/resolv.conf.

You should also have your public IP address and hostname listed in /etc/hosts, that's typically setup for you during the installation of your OS.

You may want to log into Virtualmin, and click System Settings -> Re-Check Config, just to make sure it doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

setting the PHP Execution Mode to "CGI" did not change anything...

the php info page is lightning fast... I added the entry to /etc/hosts... I will see about re-installing the app. hopefully its just screwed up.. Thanks, i will let you know..

So do you think the 400+ running processes is normal though?

Well, there are deeper problems that the script.

I am having all sorts of issues... I dont even know where the ip below is coming from... its not the one on this box? fresh install of wordpress flies but wont resolve to anything outside either...

I think i am going to uninstall and re-install virtualmin from scratch.. What is the best way to do this to be sure all is wiped w/o having to do the entire OS? Any other ideas?

This is very strange...

Thanks

The number of running processes isn't significant; what you should be concerned about is what processes are running.

In your case, you have a lot of kernel processes such as "process_name/N" running -- but you'll have one of those for each CPU core on your system.

So if this is a quad CPU and quad core system, you'd have 16 versions of each of those kernel processes running. And that would quickly give you more running processes, but only because you have more CPUs and cores.

I'm not seeing anything unusual with your server itself -- the load looks fine and the processes look normal.

ha we must have been typing at same time..

Could you maybe peek at this thing and see if you find anything that i am just missing before i try to re-install? I will enable the remote support thing.. if you need anything else let me know too..

PS: the new / clean install of wordpress on a different domain wont see the wordpress.org servers either... i put it here to test.. http://dealbent.com/wordpress/ And this is in the dashboard for some of their stuff: WP HTTP Error: Couldn't resolve host 'wordpress.org'

Thanks please advise.

Update: I will have to send creds to you apparently: "Failed to enable remote login : Remote login access cannot be scheduled for disabling, as the at command is not installed on your system"

Well, reinstalling isn't likely to solve any problems unless you know what to do differently :-)

And it's not possible to wipe all the configs and start from scratch unless you were to start with a new distro install. You can uninstall Virtualmin with "./install.sh -u", but that only uninstalls the application, it doesn't undo all the config changes that have occurred so far.

However, the warning you're seeing in your logs isn't significant; since your test.php script worked, your Apache setup seems fine. You're getting this warning here:

NameVirtualHost 98.142.218.15:80 has no VirtualHosts

All that means is that Apache has a line in it that tells it to serve requests for the IP 98.142.218.15, but that IP doesn't have any domains setup on it.

If your domain is serving any requests at all, that means the Apache config isn't the problem here. Because your test.php script works, that means your problem is likely related to either your application, or your database.

It also wouldn't hurt to make sure it's resolving DNS requests, and the /etc/resolv.conf is setup correctly. I'd also recommend running System Settings -> Re-Check Config.

PS: the new / clean install of wordpress on a different domain wont see the wordpress.org servers either... i put it here to test.

Well, did you look into the /etc/resolv.conf and System Settings -> Re-Check Config fixes I mentioned in comment #16 above?

If you look into and correct those issues, that should fix the problem in resolving domains.

I believe this is right...?

[root@host01 /]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 4.2.2.2
# Generated by NetworkManager
[root@host01 /]#

As for as it being the database, it was clean too on this new domain i set up for testing. The new website browses fast including the WP admin panel.. For some reason it doesn't want to see outside... Are there other files that could have been affected from the backup restore (if it was corrupted) that i can manually edit possibly?

Make sense?

Thx

System Settings -> Re-Check Config no issues there..

Checking Configuration

ClamAV is installed and assumed to be running.

Plugin DAV Login is installed OK.

Plugin AWstats reporting is installed OK.

Plugin Mailman is installed OK.

Plugin Protected web directories is installed OK.

Plugin Additional content styles is installed OK.

Plugin Additional content styles from OpenWebDesign.org is installed OK.

Plugin Virtualmin Support Links is installed OK.

Using network interface eth0 for virtual IPs.

IPv6 addresses are available, using interface eth0.

Default IP address for virtual servers is 98.142.218.20.

Both user and group quotas are enabled for home and email directories.

All commands needed to create and restore backups are installed.

Resource limits are supported and configured correctly.

The selected package management and update systems are installed OK.

.. your system is ready for use by Virtualmin.

In your /etc/resolv.conf file, I would comment out all the lines except for this one:

nameserver 127.0.0.1

Once you do that, run this command:

host google.com

Does that command show Google's IP addresses?

So I did that as follows:

[root@host01 etc]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 127.0.0.1
#nameserver 8.8.8.8
#nameserver 4.2.2.2
# Generated by NetworkManager
[root@host01 etc]#

And no connection...

[root@host01 etc]# host google.com ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached [root@host01 etc]#

Is BIND running, and listening on localhost?

You can determine that by running this command:

netstat -an | grep :53

Appears to be...

[root@host01 etc]# netstat -an | grep :53

That does indeed appear to be listening. However, it's not answering queries, so some other problem is preventing BIND from working.

Can you post the contents of your less /etc/named.conf file?

should those lines with "localnets;" be there? I dont recall ever seeing this before...

I think i am going to do to the datacenter tonight and wipe the box and do a fresh OS install and start over.

Maybe when vmin intalled at first something got screwed up with the initial errors i saw...?

Then i will re-build the domain and files manually instead of restoring a backup.

Hopefully it will go well this time..

Okay, sounds good, let us know how that goes!

If you have problems, let's start fresh in a new request, and we'll figure out what's going on there.

Hey Eric,

Well, newly installed and all went well. I wish i knew what happened before.. that was frustrating.. Thanks for your help!
