Backup Virtual Servers fails with error msg - Backup failed : Missing or invalid SSH server

Hi Guys,

Since upgrading to Virtualmin 3.87 Pro, the Backup Virtual Servers feature using SSH has been failing with this error:

Backup failed : Missing or invalid SSH server

Backups were working prior to the update. Do you have a "hot fix" or instructions on how I can fix this issue?

Thanks!

Update: the error also occurs when I try to run the backup manually.

I have just tested this on a 3.87 GPL Virtualmin server and the same error occurs when trying to run the backup manually.

Error Backup failed : Missing or invalid SSH server

Howdy! Is there any chance you could post a screenshot of the Scheduled Backup screen that's failing?

You certainly shouldn't be seeing that problem, but there may be some clues in your Scheduled Backup screen that could help us track down what's going on. Thanks!

I don't think this will make a difference, but just one shot in the dark before we ask Jamie for some help... if you input "root" as the username (but leave the password blank), do you continue to receive the same error message when you manually run the backup?

Thanks!

Yes, same error.

Hi Jamie -- do you know what would cause him to receive that "Missing or invalid SSH server" error, when there's a hostname listed in there? Thanks!

Hi Guys,

Any update on this one? I'm just keen to have this issue resolved quickly, because as it stands right now - all our backups are broke.

Thanks

What exactly are you entering as the SSH server host name? This error could happen if virtualmin cannot resolve the name.

This error could happen if virtualmin cannot resolve the name.

Bloody hell! That was the problem, the DNS entry for that host name had been accidentally removed.

Any chance, we can change the error message to something more description like: Unable to resolve the specified SSH server. Check DNS resolution for server name.

Thanks :)

Just to let you know that backups are now running again.

Thanks very much for your support, it means a lot!

Best wishes to you both :)

Good idea .. I will make the message more informative in the case where DNS resolution fails.
