Can the user mail be stripped out?

We have dedicated mail servers. We don't want any confusing email stuff in a user GUI. Is that possible?

Basically, I am a bit of a newbie but when a user logs in to add FTP users the dialog box is all about mail. There does not appear to be an option for just FTP, but a drop-down that you can have both. Is there any way the control panel can provide a means to add FTP users in a simple and straightforward manner? Do not other hosting companies also no have a need for email services on their stand-alone Virtualmin servers?

You can try disabling the email feature for the domain - this can be done on the Edit Virtual Server page, in the Enabled features section.

If you don't plan to use Virtualmin for mail ever, you can disable it globally at System Settings -> Features and Plugins.

Hi Jamie:

We have disabled it globally. And I could be missing something but there does not appear to be any way to change the interface. Nor does the second account that I added work. I have never really added a second FTP user account before. If I can't do it, I am pretty sure our client won't be able to. The combining of mail and FTP dialog boxes seem most unfortunate. Does this screenshot look right to you? Is that the dialog box that a client would add FTP?

For example, my name is S. Hirsch and I want to add a username of "hirsch" and a password. I don't see a way to control what the username is.

Are you looking to add an FTP user for managing web content?

If that's the case, you would do that by going into Edit Mail and FTP Users, and click "Add a website FTP access user" over on the right.

Whenever you add an account, be it an FTP account or an email account -- it will by default be in the format "username.domain".

So if you generate an account for a user named "hirsch" in the domain "example.com", the username it would create is "hirsch.example".

It does that so that usernames within different domains don't conflict with each other.

If that's not what you want -- you can disable that behavior by going into System Settings -> Virtualmin Config -> Defaults for New Domains, and set "Include domain name in usernames" from "Always" to "Only to avoid clash".
