Unable to access my pop3 box

Whenever I log in to usermin, this is the error i get:

An error occurred listing mail in this folder : Failed to login to POP3 server : Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2010-10-22 12:57:41]

Howdy -- what shows up in your mail log when that occurs? You can see your mail log in /var/log/maillog.

Also, are you able to log in as that user using a desktop client such as Outlook or Thunderbird?

Here is what the mail client on my laptop says:

Unable to send or receive messages for the CJ PreachWord account. Windows Live Mail couldn't log on to the email server using authenticated POP (APOP). Contact your email provider and verify that it supports authenticated POP. To change this logon setting, in the folder list, right-click on the account name, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. In the Properties dialog, click the Servers tab and then under Incoming Mail Server, select a logon option.

Server: 'mail.preachword.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x80004005 Protocol: POP3 Port: 110 Secure(SSL): No

This is what i see in the mail log related to the recent error:

bounce-862505_HTML-887096482-15401568-69862-58997@bounce.officeliveemail...

Hmm, what we'd be looking for is some sort of error that occurs at the time you login to your server.

It sounds like there's an error of some sort occurring while you're attempting to log in. Dovecot should be reporting those errors in the mail log there.

Do you see anything towards the end of the maillog that looks like a login related error of some sort?

This isn't the actual maillog, and doesn't contain any useful information for troubleshooting problems. On the server, you can find the maillog in /var/log/maillog or /var/log/mail.log

Webmin has a System Logs module you can use, if you don't want to login via ssh. Browse to Webmin>System>System Logs

Then click on View.. beside the "/var/log/maillog" item in the list of logs. You'll need to attempt to login with your mail client, and then refresh the view immediately after in order to see the errors related to the specific problem.

Hmm, I'm not seeing any messages in the above output that would explain why you can't log into your mail box.

Is there any chance you could attach your mail log to this request? Your mail log is available in "/var/log/maillog".

And the account name you're using to log in is "cj.preachword", is that correct?

Yes, the ac name is cj.preachwod.

the /var/log/maillog is attached herewith.

Hrm, the name "cj.preachword" doesn't appear in your logs... which is a bit odd!

I think to figure out what's going on, that I may need to log in and take a look for myself.

To do that, I'd need two things:

  1. The ability to log in as root over SSH. To provide that, you can go into the Virtualmin Support module, and enable Remote Support.

  2. I'd also need the username and password that isn't working. You said the username is "cj.preachword", what is the associated password to that account?

Thanks!

i have enabled remote support login and sent the password for cj.preachword.

it also looks like that the main email preachword@preachword.com for preachword.com is not working too. Getting the same error as like that for cj.preachword.

JUST FOUND OUT: I CAN READ MAIL FROM Webmin-Servers-Read User Mail BUT NOT FROM PORT 20000 OR FROM A MAIL CLIENT.

It looks like a permissions issue was preventing Dovecot from setting up it's control files.

I modified the Dovecot config to handle that better, and am now able to successfully log in as that user.

Is it working for you as well now?
