My colocated server stopped accepting smtp connections today. They tell me they aren't blocking port 25.

While your colo center probably isn't, a lot of ISP's are blocking port 25 these days (such as Comcast).
If you your email client can't reach the email server, and alternative would be to use port 465 or 587, and enable SSL in your client.
