I note when I get a service monitor warning email, it is of the general form:
"Monitor on vmin.server.hostname for 'Website www.test.domain' has detected that the service has gone down at Date Time"
The website name seems to always be prepended with www. So, even though the virtual site name is:
test.domain
The server monitor reports it as www.test.domain
I also note that if you do a preview of a web site, vitrulamin uses the link or form:
https://vmin.host:10000/virtual-server/link.cgi/host.IP/http://www.test....
This must be something internal to vmin. Anyway to get the server monitor to report the actual site address? It would be less confusing for users getting the report ...

Yes, currently Virtualmin always monitors the website for www.domain.com instead of just domain.com.
However, both should work fine, as when you setup a domain DNS records for both www.domain.com and domain.com are created in Virtualmin..

But www.domain.com doesn't actually exist ... not running Vmin's DNS (we use the campus DNS server ... so the domain could even be something like name1.name2.domain.edu ... but as I understand it, Vmin could care less about what the virtual web domain name is anyway) ...
My take on your response is just that Vmin reports using www.domain.com regardless of the live domain name ... to bad we (the admin or reseller) can't specify what domain name to issue in the report ... just that it might appear misleading to a site owner or reseller who hasn't ever heard of www.domain.com ...

Good point .. in that case, using www.domain doesn't make sense. I will fix this in the next Virtualmin release.
