How do Tell virtualmin to create servers on the network drive?

I would like the freedom of ghosting the main server when I need to. How do you tell virtualmin to create new virtual servers on the attached USB drive so that my customers websites are not affected by applying a ghost image to the server?

You can configure Virtualmin to put home directories for virtual servers on another drive (such as an external USB device) at System Setting -> Module Config -> Defaults for new domains -> Home directory base.

However, this will not include other configs associated with a domain like DNS, apache, mysql, mailboxes, etc..

I would strongly recommend against trying to store all configs on an external drive like this. Instead, use it for regular backups, and if you want to wipe the system, you can do so and then restore backups.

If I have to ghost the server does the build in back up store everything including DNS settings, SQL databases, mailboxes etc?

I guess I'm asking is there such a thing as a total back up and restore solution for a server?

Yes, ghosting would include everything, so you could also use that as a backup method.
