We are upgrading our server and therefore reloading Virtualmin
The serial install.sh download is now only for Linux or Solaris and we are using Debian 5.0.
Is it possible to get one for Debian 5.0?

Hello -- the Linux install.sh will actually do what you need.
Debian 5 is a Linux distribution -- the Linux install.sh supports Debian as well as Ubuntu, CentOS, and others.
Let us know if you have any other questions.

I thought it should but when I run it I get this
sh ./install.shCreating Virtualmin licence file Installing CSW package installer ./install.sh: line 41: /usr/sfw/bin/wget: No such file or directory ./install.sh: line 45: pkginfo: command not found ./install.sh: line 47: pkgadd: command not found

Hmm, what does it show if you run these commands:
uname -a
cat /etc/issue
Also, it should have created a file in /root/virtualmin-install.log -- can you attach that file to this task?
Thanks!

Hi
uname -aLinux sv15 2.6.26-2-686 #1 SMP Mon May 11 19:00:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
It does not seem to have created the log file though

Are you sure you didn't download the Solaris installer by mistake? Those errors are related to Solaris-specific commands..

Hi
You were right again, many thanks.
It might be worth separating the downloads more as when you hover over them in Firefox it highlights both and I never gave it a thought that there was 2 different ones.

Cool, I will mark this as fixed..

It has been st this point for about 20 minutes

This is the install log at present (attached)
Had to add .txt to upload

It looks like MySQL is failing to start, the install log is showing this:
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.
The server you're installing this onto -- is it a fresh Debian install? Had anything been setup on it previously -- such as with MySQL?

This is a clean debain install
The only thing added was ssh
Submitted by andreychek on Sun, 06/14/2009 - 19:32 Comment #13
Okay, well, it shouldn't do that ;-)
I'm not really sure why it failed there -- would you mind if I logged into your system to complete the install?
If that's okay, can you email login details to eric@virtualmin.com? And if you can, include a link to this report in the message body.
Thanks!

I have sent email, thanks

Thanks Greg, I just received it.
The connection seems to hang when I attempt to SSH into the server -- is SSH open to the outside world?

Sorry Eric.
No it is only open to set IP's, can you email me your IP and I will give you access

Okay, as per our email discussion, it looks like it got hung up on MySQL for some reason.
By stopping MySQL, the install continued, and after running a dpkg --configure -a, it seems to be in good shape.
Feel free to poke around on your system now, it should be installed and configured.
I passed this info along with the completed install log onto Joe so he can look into the issue for future installs.

Thanks for your help Eric.
Looks good
When checking configuration I get
Quotas are not enabled on the filesystem /home which contains home directories under /home and email files under /home. Quota editing has been disabled.
Which is the best way to fix this
Submitted by andreychek on Sun, 06/14/2009 - 22:13 Comment #19
Hrm, that's odd, because they are actually enabled on /home!
I'm taking a look now.
Submitted by andreychek on Sun, 06/14/2009 - 22:20 Comment #20
I see, for some reason, the server thinks /home is mounted read-only:
Failed to open /home/quota.user for writing : Read-only file system
The same error occurs if I try to create a file there.
I'm looking into the cause of that.

I remounted /home as read-write, and it seems to be working.
It's doing the initial quotacheck now -- that'll take some time since you have quite a bit of data there, but once it's done the config check should work fine (as should quotas!).

Sorry to annoy you again
Due to the configuration of the switch we are using for our bladecenter we are connecting to the internet via eth1.
After the install it is saying ..
Primary interface IP address 192.168.0.5 Externally visible IP address 123.200.169.245
and
Default shared address 192.168.0.5
Will this cause any problems? Should we change the default shared address and if so how?

It sounds like it's detecting most of that correctly, but it is something to watch out for.
You might want to look in System Settings -> Module Config -> Network Settings to make sure it's doing things as you'd require.
For example, you may need to set the DNS server to use the external facing IP address -- if it tries to use the internal IP, that won't work quite right :-)
Submitted by JamieCameron on Mon, 06/15/2009 - 00:42 Comment #25
Yes, you need to tell Virtualmin what your external IP is, as it cannot be detected automatically. As Eric says, this is set in the 'Default IP address for DNS records' field on the Module Config page.
