Can't send email.

New install of Centos 7, yum update -y, install Virtualmin Pro. Tested email -> can't receive but can't send.

do i have to setup a relayhost to my ISP, teksavvy? http://www.skoba.ca/relaying-email-with-teksavvy/

if so, how to do?

whoops. Can receive emails but can't send emails.

Howdy -- it looks like you're receiving connection refused messages when trying to send outgoing emails.

It looks like that error is occurring for multiple outgoing email servers, so that may indicate something is blocking those messages.

Some providers block outgoing email -- do you know if perhaps your provider is doing the blocking here?

My suggestion would be to talk to your ISP, and see if they can remove that restriction. According to the article you linked to, it's an option to do that.

Otherwise, you would need to manually configure relaying.

The article you linked shows some of those details, but the full details of how to do it are here:

https://www.dnsexit.com/support/mailrelay/postfix.html

Just substitute "smtp.teksavvy.com" anytime you see "relay.dnsexit.com".

i think i followed the dnsexit instruction, substituting smtp.teksavvy.com. but still got connection timed out.

perhaps i don't have a correct username:password to use in /etc/postfix/relay_passwd. i emailed teksavvy to see if they would give me one.

It doesn't actually look like it's attempting to use the relayhost.

What is the output of the command "postconf -n"?

Also, did you restart Postfix after making the changes? If not, I'd recommend doing that.

i got a teksavvy email and password from teksavvy and plugged in [out.teksavvy.com]:1025 in hopefully the correct places. yes i did restart postfix.

it gave mixed results: emails were sent to gmail, but not to another email getting closer but perhaps still not working 100%.

partial success: emails to gmail are being sent but emails to another address are not.

Rather than replying to an email, could you try sending a new one from Gmail or another provider?

That will rule out some factors.

Relaying outgoing email through your provider shouldn't affect incoming email though -- only the outgoing email goes through them.

Also, what is the output of the command "postconf -n"?

i sent a new email from gmail. gmail got back a reject message:

My apologies, I realized after reviewing some comments above that you did already share your postconf output.

However, looking at your hostname in the Postfix config you shared there, that may be something we want to address.

Your server should have a fully qualified hostname, in the format host.domain.tld.

What you'd want to do, is set a hostname using the command:

hostname host.domain.tld

Then, add that hostname to the end of the "mydestination" line in your /etc/postfix/main.cf file.

Lastly, you'd also want to ensure that in /etc/hosts, there is a line wih your hostname and IP address in there.

wow! that enables the incoming email is being received from gmail and yahoo. thank you!

however an email sent from another email address from my isp teksavvy gets rejected:

Reporting-MTA: dns; server17.hostwhitelabel.com

Action: failed

I see a reference to one email in the above, and that email was successfully delivered to an account your server.

It looks like it's being sent from a teksavvy.com mail server, does that sound like the one you were trying to send?

Just to verify that it's going to the expected mail folder, you could always review /var/log/procmail.log to see where it's being delivered.

If you're using a client like Outlook, you may want to verify that the email didn't end up in your Junk folder.

i opened up a ticket with the webhost on which the remote emails reside.

was the successful email delivery the bounceback/mail delivery failure message? i did get two emails in my inbox regarding mail delivery failure (one timestamped 15:48 and the other 16:13)

here's the recent procmail.log:

Has the address you've been attempting to email been the same in all the tests you've been trying?

Also, what is the "support@pppoe.ca" address, is that one of your email addresses?

whoops! my webhosting folks got back to me. it was because i didn't set up a remote mail exchanger MX record for harreson.com pointing to my vps.

i did that and now i can receive and send on both ends.

thank you andreychek for all your time and effort to help me with this email issue. there's a lot to learn in the linux world and i am grateful that you were so kind and generous to offer your help!

Hey that's great, I'm glad you were able to get things working!

it's because i forgot to remove the harreson.com domain from the shared hosting that i got into this trouble.

i removed the harreson.com domain from my crocweb hosting and everything seems to be working. i think that i have all the necessary settings in my domain registrar now pointing to the vps.

thank again for all your help :-)
