Alias Server unique Email Alias OR Virtualmin stomps /etc/postfix/virtual

Problem summary:

  • A Virtualmin Virtual Server (parent.com) with several Alias Servers (alias1.com, alias2.com, alias3.com).
  • Server Template -> Mail for domain -> "Mail alias mode for alias domains" is set to "Copy aliases from target" (note: "Catchall forwarding" is completely unacceptable as it will not bounce non-existent mailboxes/aliases at the SMTP connection).
  • support@alias2.com needs to go somewhere other than support@parent.com (i.e. alternate mailbox or forwarded elsewhere).

Attempted solution:

  • Edit /etc/postfix/virtual (either manually or through Webmin) and modify support@alias2.com, (or even create a completely unique virtual alias say: unused@alias2.com).
  • Any mailbox changes in Virtualmin will stomp all changes to /etc/postfix/virtual (even for unique virtual aliases that are not related to Virtualmin).

Support request:

Is there a Virtualmin accepted solution to this problem ?

Well, the trouble there is that the idea of an alias, is that it would have the same addresses as the parent.

With that particular setup, you would run the risk of unusual problems moving forward.

Instead of using a standard alias, could you use the "Alias with own email" option for the "alias2.com" domain? And then you could setup email however you need within that particular domain, as email would be completely independent from the parent.

Thanks for your response, I think your proposed solution is reasonable.
