I need to run PHP 5.6 and MySql 5.6.
I'm currently running an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server with PHP 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.21 Apache 2.2.22, MySql 5.5.46 with Webmin version 1.782 and Virtualmin version 5.0 . Currently I'm looking for the most recommended and ideally simplest way to do this.
I was wondering if I can update PHP and MySql on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to versions 5.6 and if possible what are the recommended steps if anyone has been successful?
Or if instead it's recommended to upgrade Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS to run PHP 5.6 and MySql 5.6, is there any guides or proven steps to run an inline upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04? I have a web server running numerous virtual sites and some with SSL being used. Has anyone been successful on performing an inline upgrade of this type within Virtualmin?
Any suggestions or steps on how best to handle this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Howdy -- there are ways of putting newer PHP and MySQL versions onto an existing Ubuntu server, though they aren't tested or supported by us. Even so, others have had success with them. But they're similar to using third party repositories on CentOS, and I can't really recommend it.
What you could do though is an inline upgrade to a newer Ubuntu version. We'd recommend testing that process first on a test server, but there are instructions for doing that here:
