tried to run the install script got this error This script cannot be installed, as this virtual server does not meet its requirements : phpMyAdmin requires MySQL version 5.5 or later
how can I update to 5.5 w/o breaking the sites/server?

Howdy -- yeah, unfortunately, the most recent phpMyAdmin does indeed require a MySQL version that's only available in the most recent of distributions.
There isn't a simple way to upgrade to MySQL 5.5 on CentOS 6.
Our recommendation would be to install an older version of phpMyAdmin, rather than the most recent version. An older version would work well on CentOS 6.
The 4.0.10 version will work on your distro.
