No databases visible after installing phpmyadmin from install scripts

When I install phpmyadmin, after Iog into phpmyadmin, no databases are listed as being available.

As a side note. If it were possible to install phpmyadmin so that all users could use phpmyadmin from one virtual domain with SSL, that would basically do what I would want to set up.
