Restore Failing

Restore Virtual Servers
When trying to do a restore from the previous day, or any other day for that matter, I receive the following error. This error happens whether I select one domain or all domains.

Starting restore of 9 domains from local file /tmp ..

Extracting backup archive files .. .. extraction of /tmp/.webmin failed :

cat: /tmp/.webmin: Is a directory /bin/tar: This does not look like a tar archive /bin/tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

.. failed! See the progress output above for the reason why.

Howdy -- the error you're getting above suggest that Virtualmin is trying to restore all the files in the directory, but since it's located in /tmp, it appears to be getting confused with other files and directories in there.

You may want to make a directory just for backups, and place your backups there. Once you do that, try the restore again and see if that helps.

The Support area here is for folks using Virtualmin Pro though... if you're using Virtualmin GPL, we'd encourage you to use the Forums for support. We monitor those, along with lots of wonderful folks in the community. Thanks!

Thanks for your response. Oooops.... I am new to Virtualmin, the product and site, kindly forgive my ignorance for posting in the wrong place - moving forward I will use the forums.

That said, I created a backup directory, moved the .tar.gz files into it, and tried to do a restore - problem is, it is not asking me what date to restore from thus it is restoring from last night which has the bad data. In the failing scenario, it does give me the option, maybe because I am selecting it via the "Backup Logs" menu. Is there a way for me to redirect the "Backup Logs" to select from the /backup folder as opposed to the /tmp folder?

Would you prefer that I continue this in the forums? Not sure whether double posting is acceptable.

In general, we suggest putting all the backups for a given day into one directory.

You'd then have a unique backup directory for every day of the week, or perhaps every day of the month.

If you have a number of backups, all in one directory, and you only want to restore some of them -- you'd need to either remove the ones you don't want restored, and have Virtualmin restore the remainder -- or you could restore them one at a time, telling Virtualmin which backups you want to restore.

If you want to talk that through more -- go ahead and post your questions in the forums, that's no problem at all, and we can continue over there.
