Is there a way to search e.g. /var/log/proftpd/proftpd.log from within Virtualmin either as a top admin or as a server/domain admin?

Howdy -- you can do that in Webmin -> System -> System Logs.
If you don't see the ProFTPd logs there by default, you can add them in by clicking "Add a new system log.", or just choosing "View log file:" at the bottom.
