Migration Questions

Hi guys.

I need to move my existing Virtualmin server from a dedicated box to a Rackspace CloudServer. I also still have some accounts on an old cPanel server to move. A couple of questions.

  1. Is there any documentation on how to share DNS between servers until a move is complete? For example, on the cPanel server my hostname is admin.cwthost.com and nameservers ns1 and ns2. cwthost.com. To keep my clients from having to repoint their DNS, I would like to somehow use it on both. Is that possible?

  2. I don't see PHP 5.3 on bleed. Some apps are requiring it now. Any solution?

  3. CentOS still the preferred OS?

  4. I might pay you to do the new server, is it still only $49? Such a bargain!

Thanks.

We do have migration instructions, but they're geared towards doing the entire migration at once.

Doing that is simpler overall, and requires less intermediate steps.

But, it requires more preparation (in that you have to test all the sites at once), and there may be a longer period of downtime some evening for all your sites.

Still, doing it all at once is my preferred method :-) There are instructions on that here:

Unfortunately, it's not possible to have nameservers that point to each server. If you want to migrate one domain at a time, you'd need to setup a second set of nameservers to use on your new server during your migration.

Correct, Virtualmin's bleed repo only offers PHP 5.2.17. You might consider migrating to a distribution that uses PHP 5.3 by default, such as CentOS 6. Also, CentOS 5.6 offers a "php53" package for those looking to use PHP 5.3 on CentOs 5.

CentOS still the preferred OS?

I feel this comes down to personal preference; I'd suggest using Grade A supported distribution you're most comfortable with :-)

You can see what all is supported here:

We can do the Virtualmin installation for $49, sure! What we do there is run through the install.sh installer, and do some of the initial configuration for you (ie, we'll choose settings during the post-install wizard that make sense for your server).

With how simple the install.sh is, you might be able to save yourself $49 by running that yourself. But if you'd like a hand in getting things up and running, we can certainly do that for you.

If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know!
