A few followup questions for you --
Which version of Virtualmin are you using?
In Backups and Restore -> Scheduled Backups -> Your Backup, what is the "Backup format" set to?
In System Settings -> Virtualmin Configuration -> Backup and Restore, what is "Backup compression format" set to?

Thanks for pointing this out - it is actually a Virtualmin bug, which will be fixed in the 3.85 release,
