Hey Jamie,
FreeBSD can be rebuilt to allow for longer usernames, and many of our FreeBSD users have done so. I went searching for the configurable option where we could allow them to make use of the longer names, but it doesn't appear to be configurable. It probably should be. The 16 char limit is rather uncomfortable, especially for user+domain names.
Maybe I'm just missing the option?
