My server will no longer allow non root users to login using SSH, root can login perfectly (server has been live and SSH has been working perfectly for 18+ months) But as of a few days only root can login, all other users in /var/log/secure I can see the entry "Mar 12 15:43:57 tasmin sshd[26073]: Accepted password for denis.croombs from 86.45.134.224 port 58726 ssh2" but no more and no entry in /var/log/messages One user has keyless ssh setup and that also stopped working at the same time.
Any clues Denis

What shell do these users have?
Also, what gets logged to /var/log/maillog when they try to login?

What shell are the affected users setup with?
And what do those users see upon trying to log in?

Hi
They are setup with bash shell. /var/log/maillog only has rbl blocks within +- 1 minutes of the person trying to login.
Thanks

Hi
Sorry, I forgot to add this to my last post.
The connection is closed (the putty session shuts down) Same putty settings & on the same laptop root is perfect.

So do you mean that root logins are failing periodically too?
If so, is the system perhaps low enough on RAM that ssh cannot run user shells when logging in?

Hi Jamie
No root works all the time, it is just virtualmin users who have the problem.
Thanks

If you like, I could login to your system myself to look at this? You can see instructions on how to give us limited-time access at : https://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/system/support
