Updated 15 files, after update Apache would not start.

Failed to start service :

  • Starting web server apache2 Syntax error on line 61 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/armstrong.k12.ia.us.conf: Invalid command 'php_value', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

I did the google search a little late, but after reinstall of PHP5 still had problem with two sites. I "Fixed" the problem by removing the PHP entries in the conf files of the sites.

The two sites were "Restored" from a VirtualMin GPL on Ubuntu 7.x server. I noticed the .conf files were only 500bytes, where all the others were 1-2 K. I tried to move over a .conf file from a working server and editing to match the site without success.

I backed up the virtual server "resources.aea8.k12.ia.us", deleted the virtual server. then tried to create a new server with the same name. Virtualmin will not allow me to create the virtual server as the user already exists.

I then created a new virtual server with the same IP address of the one that will not work and I can not connect to that virtual server via IP.

I have been working on this for the last 7 hours and I believe I am only making things worse. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

This is an unfortunate problem that seems to come up on occasion -- we've usually seen it on updates to Debian's mod_php package, though apparently it can occur on Ubuntu as well.

There's another ticket that outlines some details here:

However, a quick fix would be to re-enable the mod_php module (not just reinstall, but re-enable).

You can enable it using Webmin -> Servers -> Apache Webserver -> Configure Apache Modules.

Thanks, That was the problem.

It took more time restoring the site back after I deleted it.

Great! For reasons unknown to me, Debian's Apache package sometimes disabled mod_php when upgraded, which causes this error.
