All virtual servers down - unknown cause

I have no idea what has caused these servers to go down but the only way i have managed to get some up and running is to backup/delete/restore every server there is about 63 and I don't want to do all of them

I have done this to a couple of servers because they need to be running

After killing the apache processes running on port 80/443 i restarted the service ok in vitrualmin and sites started to work but displayed a 403 error

apache log:

[Wed Sep 09 11:05:10 2009] [crit] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] (13)Permission denied: /home/easylife/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable

(there is no .htaccess file on this domain, or any of the others that are producing the same error.)

I have no idea what could have caused this problem as i haven't worked for the company for 9 monthes

On top of all this Email seems to have died completly!

Is there any way someone can take a look at the server and help me out with this?

Yeah I can take a look -- can you email root login details to eric@virtualmin.com?

If you can, include a link to this Issue Report in the message body.

I know you said you aren't sure of what happened to cause that -- do you know if you had done any system updates recently perhaps?

Are there other admins for the box who could have?

I'll take a look though and let you know what I find!

Hi Eric,

Thanks for responding.

There has been another server admin in the company since i left and when i looked at the server it looked as though it had not been touched since i left :(

I updated all software on the server since logging on.

The only part of email that seems to be working is outgoing email from usermin.

Thanks.

Rich.

Hmm, I don't seem to be able to connect to SSH or Webmin for the host "aeisecurity.com".

Is that the correct domain name? Are there any IP address or port restrictions?

My goal is to be able to log in over SSH to take a look around... thanks!

There seems to be a few issues going on here, which we went over via email.

One of the culprits was a bad line in the Postfix config that was causing the daemon to die -- I set the smtpd_recipient_restrictions line back to the default.

It seems like at least some of the domains are using the wrong nameserver, causing some of the lookups to provide the incorrect IP address. Rich is going to resolve this tomorrow.

Also, there was a permissions issue with Apache. I'm not sure of the cause of this, as the suexecgroup line is correctly listed in the conf files.

For the time being, adding the executable bit to the directory allows Apache to read this. Rich will let us know if this particular setup causes any issues.
