I'm setting up a backup mx/dns on a vps, its a blank minimal centos 5.2 install and i can't get bind to start

i get the following output in /var/log/messages

Feb 19 19:25:53 blacsk543 named[44368]: starting BIND 9.3.4-P1 -u named -c /etc/named.conf -n 1 -u named -t /var/named/run-root

the directories /var/run/named and /var/named/chroot/var/run/named/ both exist and appear to be writable to named, but i'm not sure which of these is used
