User Email under a domain not working

I am unable to set up any of the 'emails under a domain', though I was able to set up the main email account of a domain on windows 8 mail client.

I am able to set up bislinks@bislinks.com but unable to set up cj@bislinks.com on Windows 8 Mail App.

This is the error I receive:

"We still cant find settings for cj@bislinks.com...."

Status:
Closed (fixed)

Comments

Howdy -- it sounds like the mail client is trying to autodetect the settings... but for Windows Mail, that likely won't work unless the server is running Exchange.

Rather than having it autodetect the account settings, I'd suggest inputting the settings manually.

If you continue to have trouble even when manually inputting it, you may want to review the email logs in /var/log/maillog to see if any errors are showing up there.

Oh I forgot to mention that for emails 'under a domain,' I am able login to Usermin and Squirrelmail.

Looks like the error is triggered when Windows 8 mail app is looking for 'settings' for cj@bislinks.com but cannot find it!

I have tried manually inputting, but I am still getting the same error...

I unfortunately don't have a Windows 8 machine I can test with, but I was able to use Windows Live Mail on a Windows 7 system.

One thing you may want to try is to see if it works on Thunderbird. That would rule out a number of possible configuration issues.

However, it doesn't appear that you're the only one having trouble getting the email client on Windows 8 to connect to an IMAP account... two examples I see are here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-ecoms/tring-t...

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itprogeneral/thread/a...

There aren't any clear answers, and in some cases the solution was to just use a different email client.

The one thing I did see in there that may be worth trying is to verify that your IMAP server is using a commercial SSL certificate, and not a self-signed certificate.

However, it may be simpler to use Thunderbird as an email client instead, as it'll work with a commercial or self-signed cert :-)

I am using a commercial SSL cert. I am not sure if I imported it correctly to IMAP server.

I did use the 'copy to Dovecot' button under 'Manage SSL certificate' category under this domain.

Yeah, the Copy to Dovecot and Copy to Postfix buttons (you'd want to do both) is the correct way to do that.

My recommendation at this point is to try a different client, such as Thunderbird, and to see if you're able to get things working with it.

Yeah, it looks like a problem with the win 8 app. But the non-seculre config worked ok on win 8 app!

Oh, it worked on Galaxy tab with the following configs: Incoming: IMAP, SSL (accept all certs), 993 Outgoing : SMTP, SSL (accept all certs), 465

I was looking at autoconfig.cgi file. There is no mention of port 465??

I do get email sent from self.

But I tested sending a mail to cj@bislinks.com from Hotmail. I did not get it. problem with the email server?

Error message was :

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed cj@bislinks.com

The autoconfig is primarily designed for Thunderbird, to my knowledge Outlook and other MS-based email clients aren't designed to use it (though they can autoconfig with MS Exchange).

When sending an email from Hotmail, you can take a look at the email logs in /var/log/maillog to see if there's any errors.

Ah, that's showing a "Relay Access Denied" error.

That can occur if a server is running a DNS server that has the MX record pointing elsewhere.

If you log into Virtualmin, and go into Server Configuration -> DNS Records, what is the MX record set to? And are there any red warning messages on that screen?

There are no reds.

This server is a paid VPS. Does that have anything to do with it?

Also, the SOA is based on VPS provider. Should I remove it and the related NS?

No, being a VPS isn't a problem.

It just sounds like a configuration issue of some sort.

Were you able to verify the MX record? Is the IP address there one that exists on your server?

bislinks's picture
Submitted by bislinks on Wed, 04/03/2013 - 20:18 Pro Licensee

Yes MX is pointing to 0 mail.bislinks.com and 5 mail.bislinks.com. The IP exists on the VPS.

Hmm, are you able to send email to any accounts on your server? Or is that just an issue with this one account?

Also, what output do these commands generate if you run these on your server:

cat /etc/resolv.conf
host bislinks.com
bislinks's picture

-sh-4.1$ host bislinks.com bislinks.com has address 50.63.27.73 bislinks.com mail is handled by 0 mail.bislinks.com. bislinks.com mail is handled by 5 mail.bislinks.com.

Is this an issue with all accounts on your server? Or is this only occurring for this one account?

bislinks's picture
Submitted by bislinks on Thu, 04/04/2013 - 07:52 Pro Licensee

yes, it is an issue with all accounts.

There seems to be a configuration issue of some sort, but I'm not sure what it is at the moment.

To further troubleshoot, I think I'd like to login to your server and do some testing.

If that's okay, you can either enable Remote Support using the Virtualmin Support module, or you can email your root login details to eric@virtualmin.com.

Thanks!

Thanks, I received your email.

I'm attempting to access the root account at bislinks.com using the password included in your email... unfortunately, it's saying the username/password combination is incorrect.

I don't seem to be able to login via SSH though... are there any SSH restrictions setup that might be preventing root from logging in?

Yes I was, thanks! Sorry for the delay -- I was having problems determining what the problem was, after poking around quite a bit.

Yeah, sending email to your server from any server on the Internet generates a "Relay Access Denied" error -- but sending an email from your server, to another user on your server, works correctly.

Something weird is going on, but I didn't know what. I spoke with Jamie about it during a meeting yesterday and he wasn't sure off the top of his head, though he plans to log in and take a look.

He can fix just about anything, so hopefully he'll have that figured out soon :-)

Sure, thanks again.

I was able to send an email to another virtual server on this VPS successfully from gmail: nothingbutfact@nothingbutfact.com

I sent two emails from Gmail; Both were successful.

But the reply from nothingbutfact.com to gmail account was unsuccessful.

Okay, I have good news and bad news :-)

The good news is that, after taking some time to ponder the issue, I believe I figured out the cause of the Relay Access Denied errors you were getting when sending messages to your server.

Try sending another test message -- I believe you'll receive that now.

As for the bad news --

Your provider appears to be blocking outgoing port 25, which I suspect is the reason you're not getting email messages originating on your server.

Any attempt to connect to a remote mail server from your system is resulting in a timeout.

There's nothing on your server that's blocking outgoing connections to port 25, so that points to an issue with your provider.

You may want to talk to your provider regarding that, to see what their requirements are for being able to send email.

bislinks's picture
Submitted by bislinks on Fri, 04/05/2013 - 16:00 Pro Licensee

The VPS provider says port 25 is not blocked.

I suspect the information they're giving you is incorrect :-)

The only other potential cause for something like that is if your own VPS were running a firewall that blocked outgoing traffic, but that's not the case.

You can verify that by running "iptables -L -n" -- that shows no connections being dropped or rejected.

When logged into your server, I can connect to any number of remote servers and ports -- however, any attempt to connect to port 25 (using telnet) on a remote server is being denied.

When Postfix attempts it, it shows "Connection timed out".

Also, as I search Google for others using GoDaddy's services, I see a number of mentions that many GoDaddy products block outgoing port 25 (though, not incoming port 25).

There's a GoDaddy support forum post on that here:

http://support.godaddy.com/groups/virtual-datacenter/forum/topic/problem...

And a webhostingtalk.com post mentioning that here:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showpost.php?s=51cb4ba6789dd6d1364fedab15a...

Those are just two examples.

You may need to try bugging a different support rep, and make sure you're asking them about outgoing port 25.

Here is an excerpt from my chat with a support team member on GoDaddy

Me: i was wondering if outgoing port 25 is blocked on my vps? 5:32:34 PM

Support: its not blocked but you have to send out using our relay server

I did setup the GoDaddy relay server dedrelay.secureserver.net in postfix.

Still, I cannot send a test mail to Hotmail or gmail from my vps!!

Their response doesn't actually make sense... if it's not blocked, there wouldn't be a need to use their relay :-)

They do seem to be actively blocking outgoing port 25, which is the reason for the problem we're seeing.

Now that we have the relay to use though, we can review what the problem is there.

I see an error regarding the relay host in your mail logs... I made a tweak to your Postfix config based on that error, and was then able to send a test email to myself.

Try sending another test email, and see if that works for you now.

Well, I got the emails sent from blog@bislinks.com to Hotmail and gmail after about 45 minutes.

So, I guess email on my VPS is working after adding relay server.

There was a small problem with the relayhost entry, but once I corrected that, email that was in the queue began flowing through.

I'm glad to see it's working now!
