DBI connect failed : Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'

I am posting this as I have read many threads going back over several years but nothing has worked.

Every suggestion has been followed, every tip has been used.

This is a brand new install of Virtualmin on a newly installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system, and when the GUI starts up and configuration begins, the MySQL module cannot be initiated due to this issue.

I have tried the MySQL password reset offered here: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/resetting-permissions.html#resetting-permissions-unix

and here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MysqlPasswordReset

and even went so far as to remove MySQL and make a new install, but even then this error:

mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

What do I have to do to make this work?
