Bayesian learning

correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can see the Virtualmin is/have configured the SpamAssassin filter to use Bayesian learning ? in this case should we use the "sa-update" manually or the spamassassin will do it automatic. ?

Howdy,

During installation of the SpamAssassin package, it automatically adds a cron job that runs "sa-update" each night.

So, that's not something you would need to do, it will occur automatically.

Note though that Virtualmin installs the default SpamAssassin package and configuration as provided by your Linux distribution -- however, SpamAssassin is typically configured on most distributions to use the learning features by default.

ok, I understand, I also saw that GrayListing is not enabled by default, should we enable it perhaps or not ? Some of peoples says greylisting will help in fighting the spam, while others says it`s not useful because it slows down the email process, and some emails may not arrive at the user inbox at all, and if someone is sending You an email for the first time from one domain it may take up to 15 - 20 min to receive that email..

looks like "boring" stuff ... any suggestion regarding the spam and greylisting ?

I don't understand this!

I thought sa-update was the mechanism for SpamAssassin to update the default rule set that SA ships with. In which case it has nothing to do with enabling/disabling Bayes learning?

In any case, I was going to ask about the sa-update cron. Previously, when I had Plesk servers, this cron was disabled by default. And I think it is too on my CentOS 5 VM server. But on my new CentOS 6 it is enabled by default.

Why would it have been disabled by default? Perhaps the thinking was that for a production server it is not "safe" to enable the updates? i.e. the new rules may create too many false positives and it's best to check them out carefully before using them?

I wonder how other folks get on who have sa-update enabled automatically?

it`s correct, Bayes learning has nothing to do with sa-update, it was just something I asked about since, bayes learning is a part of a spamassassin filter only..

When I installed latest Virtualmin on my fresh installed CentOs 6 (64 bit) the sa-update was enabled by default in chron job.. so if You have not enabled it, You can just do so... nothing wrong to enable the sa-update ....

Well, Greylisting comes down to personal preference -- but I've used it on my own mail server for years now, and I find it to be worthwhile.

It does exactly as you said -- it does reduce spam, at a cost of the first email someone sends you taking 15-20 minutes to arrive.

I find that to be a good trade off.

thank You for reply, I agree with You, the only "sometimes very irritable" cost is that first email arrives with 15-20 min latency, otherwise it`s ok ..

I have enabled it now as I will reduce the SPAM..... but users will complain for some time now :)
