Ubuntu 20 and Virtualmin

My colleague is preparing a virtual machine on which we want to install Virtualmin. He asked me if Ubuntu 20 is supported. When I replied, after looking here at a thread from January 4, 2020, that ubuntu 16 and 18 are supported, he wrote back "ubuntu is at 20 lts. 16 is legacy. 18.04 is now considered old." Do you have any feedback I can pass on?

Howdy -- thanks for contacting us!

We will indeed be adding support for Ubuntu 20.04, though that's not here yet. That was just released by Ubuntu today.

Ubuntu 16.04 will be supported for another year. We'd suggest not starting a new server with 16.04, though you have plenty of time to upgrade any already running it.

Ubuntu 18.04 will be supported until 2023 (and happens to be what most of my personal servers are running).

Hey,

Any prediction or update on time to release?

Obvs won't hold you to it, Our company arrange hosting and provide server management to a number of businesses and this week our core provider rolled out Ubuntu 20.04 images into its hypervisor. Obviously we always prefer to offer the "latest and greatest" not only to new customers but existing looking to do an incremental upgrade of their stacks (some legacy's even need an upgrade path from defunct 14.04 and soon to be 16.04).

It would be quite insightful to know a rough ETA and/or how far complete you are! Are we around the corner, down the road or miles off?

Thanks!

:) Danny "Blatant"

I am planning to work on adding Ubuntu 20.04 support next week.

I would recommend going with Debian 10 for now, if it's urgent.

Thank Ilia,

Not so much urgent as excited! :) Good luck with the U20 work, hopefully not too many issues beyond bundling the right repo's and distro's in right! Wishing you luck and easy travel :)

Good to know it's on the way

Stay safe!

Danny

Hi, First, I want to thank You all for Your work! I use Virtualmin for quite some time and it is always a pleasure. I have a server with OS Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and I was wondering, how is the support going? Any time now? Thank You in advance for your answer! Best ragards, Chris

Hi,

Thank you for your kind words!

The support for Ubuntu 20.04 has been added in our dev environment and now being actively tested.

Is Ubuntu 20.04 x64 currently part of the set of included guest images?

No, we don't supply an image with Ubuntu 20 yet.

Awesome news!

Any idea when the normal Virtualmin install.sh will support Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ?

If not, is there an install.sh anywhere that supports it ?

I am doing some tests with LXC/docker containers on 18.04 LTS right now and it seems to work pretty well, but would prefer to deploy test install and installs with 20.04 LTS.

The same time Webmin 1.950 and Virtualmin 6.10 is out. The install script is ready in dev repo already.

I am doing some tests with LXC/docker containers on 18.04 LTS right now and it seems to work pretty well,

Containers, unfortunately, might not always work as designed.

So, where is dev script? It's still not on download page, right?

Ubuntu 20 is no officially support with default install script.

When I provisioned a prod server last week I was happy to notice that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was reporting as supported in the latest installer!

Many thanks and appreciation to everyone for working so hard on the support for this distro!

(PS> You've not updated your Grade A list on https://www.virtualmin.com/os-support.html yet ;) )
