access virtualmin virtual servers before nameserver ips are registered

hi folks,

i currently have a dedicated server and am going to switch to a kvm vps. i was told by the server farm that i can use the same nameserver names on the vps that i am currently using on the dedicated box (they will of course have diffiernt ips).

i would like to get the vps, install virtualmin/webmin and then start migrating sites (some are wordpress and joomla) from the old dedicated server to the new vps, test everything and then when everything is functioning correctly, change the ip addresses for the nameservers to the new ones on the vps. this way i don't have to change the actual nameserver names (just the ip addresses for the nameservers) so my clients won't have to change nameserver information with their domain registrar of choice.

i hope this makes sense ... and is it possible?

thanks in advance, ww

Well, you can access your server at https://1.2.3.4:10000 so I don't think it would be a problem.

But why keeping the same name? If your server was, for example: blabla.yourwebsite.com, why not name the new one: newname.yourwebsite.com? You register the dns for newname.yourwebsite.com on the first server, you install everything, migrate everything, and when it's done, you change the dns of yourwebsite.com to the new server.

Or maybe I got something wrong ^^

yeah i want to keep the same nameserver names because that way my clients i host won't have to change the nameserver names with their registrar (most of them will have no clue how to do that) ... i will just change the ip addresses of the nameservers when i'm ready to move to the vps so it will be practically seamless for the clients.

i think this will work.

this way i don't have to change the actual nameserver names (just the ip addresses for the nameservers) so my clients won't have to change nameserver information with their domain registrar of choice Your clients will need to change IP for name servers at their registrar as you cant to that from your server. If they are using your name servers then is ok, only you need to make the change. Side note, dont forget to lover TTL before you make a change or your clients could be down for several hours.

For testing you should go with aliases or http://your-VPS-IP/~username-of-your-virtual-server. Other option could be, go to Wmin, Apache Webserver, click on "open" but i'm not sure if this will work (never used or tested).

i thought that the nameserver names my clients currently have set up for my current dedicated server aren't ip specificn(in other words they didn't have to enter the ip address of each nameserver when they were setting the nameservers with their registrar), so i'm hoping that my changing the nameserever ips (for the existing nameserver names we are using) will propagate when the different registrars update their database.

am i right on this?

thanks
