Unknown User

Greetings,

I have searched for this problem, but I have not found an answer.

My users prefer to user the user@domain.tld style login to the server. In past installations this has not been an issue. In my most recent installation, I am having a problem with aliases delivering.

This is the mail system at host domain.tld.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.

For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.

If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message.

               The mail system

alias2-domain.tld@domain.tld (expanded from alias1@domain.tld): unknown user: "alias1-domain.tld"

alias3-domain.tld@domain.tld (expanded from alias1@domain.tld): unknown user: "alias3-domain.tld"

Do I just have to abandon the user@domain.tld logins completely. All aliases were created using Virtualmin, so I do not understand why it is not able to find them.

Alias1 and Alias3 deliver to email addresses one in domain.tld the other @yahoo.com

I can user a mailing list for this, but I preferred not to.

Thanks for your help.

Generally, the user@domain.tld scheme works fine, also with aliases. In your case, it'd be interesting what's in the logs at the time when the error occurs. You might want to check /var/log/mail.log and /var/log/procmail.log.

Howdy,

I hadn't heard of any problems with the user@domain style before... there's a lot of folks using that.

Which Linux distro/version is it that you're using there? And do you happen to know what Postfix version?

Also, if you go into System Settings -> Re-Check Config, does it detect any problems?

I went into the postfix config and removed the line (not sure why it was there) that said furthemore.org furthemore.org

The WARNING error went away, but I still bounced with this error.

its almost like its dropping domain.tld from the user1 address. user1@domain.tld exists in the virtual server, but it not delivering to it.

It ONLY works if I change the alias to send to user1-domain.tld

Virtualmin usually creates two users (with the same user ID) when you have the user@domain.tld scheme, one with @, and one with -. Aliases are realized with Postfix' alias map feature, which can deliver an incoming mail to multiple destinations, like local users and other addresses.

Trying to figure out what's wrong exactly on your system is unfortunately too complex to do without a first-hand examination, so I can offer you to take a look at your system myself: https://www.virtualmin.com/node/29342

Feel free to contact me if you'd like that!

Yeah what you're doing should definitely work on CentOS 5... there's plenty of folks on that distro/version using the user@domain setup.

What output do you receive if you run this command:

rpm -qa | grep postfix
