a control panel that looked like rows of squares with colored icons that was four or five years ago now virtualmin is about the nearest I could find on google
the thing is I have had a stroke and everything in the docs for virtualmin is way over my head when it come to talking about the operating system is that my computer or the system of
my hosting account ? and also would virtualmin be what I am looking for? any help would be most appreciated.

Well, I suppose the question is -- what do you want a control panel to do for you?
You can host WordPress and phpBB on any web server or web hosting service.
Where Virtualmin comes in is if you plan on managing the underlying Linux operating system yourself.
In that case, Virtualmin takes the Linux system, and configures it to work as a web hosting server.
However, if you already have a web hosting account somewhere -- they should have some sort of control panel for you to use already.
But, in order to install Virtualmin, you'd need to be the sysadmin of the server you're planning to host your websites on.
