Howdy,
When the license expires, Virtualmin continues to function, and the Master Admin just receives a warning message that the license is expired.
However, you can no longer receive additional Virtualmin updates at that point, until either renewing the license, or you can downgrade your system to Virtualmin GPL.
Also, note that when you purchase a renewal -- the renewal is applied to when the Virtualmin license expired, not when you purchase it.

You're quite welcome to buy a renewal now or whenever -- renewals are applied to when your license expires, and not the day you buy them.
So if you wait a month after your license expires to renew your license -- the renewal is applied from when it expired a month ago.
