Backup Question - Is Virtual Server Disabled During Backup?

Just wondering - during a backup by VM, is the virtual server that is being processed taken offline during the process? (I think I'd prefer if it wasn't). Or is there an option that you can set for this? That would be ideal.

Thanks.

Howdy,

Nope! The Virtual Server is not taken offline during the backup process.

If anyone wanted to do such a thing, they'd probably need to do so by writing a script, and placing that in the "Command to run before backup" option in Scheduled Backups.

Thanks Eric - that's what I was hoping for.

@eric

what happens if you have a gigabyte large mysql database?

That's not a problem I have helpmin. But I see that VM has options to run scripts before and after backup. So perhaps you could disable & re-enable the virtual server that way?

I was wondering whether a web site would be down during the database backup.

Howdy,

The "mysqldump" program is used to perform the database dump -- and that can perform a dump while the database is still live.

That does leave open the possibility that data could change during the dump itself, but I haven't run into any significant issues in that regard :-)

However, if that's ever a problem -- using the innodb storage type provides a mechanism that enables mysqldump to dump the database, while maintaining the integrity of the data.
