A problem was detected with your Virtualmin license

Hello,

I get this error on the system information page: "Failed to contact licence server : Failed to connect to software.virtualmin.com:80 : Connection timed out"

Re-check Licence Status gets a time out too.

Running VM (3.88 Pro) on CentOS Linux 5.7.

Does anyone experience such a time out?

How can I try to correct this error?

Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Best regards,

Alex

Howdy,

You may have been seeing a temporary problem... if you try that again now, do you continue to see the same problem?

If not, are you able to access software.virtualmin.com from a web browser?

It is online, but it's possible that there's some trouble on the Internet between your system and the Virtualmin server.

Hello Eric,

thanks for your quick reply.

Can see software.virtualmin.com (it's a protected directory).

The problem must be something else. Attached a sreenshot of the error.

Best regards,

Alex

So, what happens if you run this command from the command line on your server:

telnet software.virtualmin.com 80

Does it just hang while trying to connect?

Hi Eric,

thanks for getting back on this.

Can't connect:

telnet software.virtualmin.com 80

Trying 108.60.199.107... telnet: connect to address 108.60.199.107: Connection timed out telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

Yeah, for some reason -- software.virtualmin.com seems to be unavailable to your server.

That will prevent the license checkin as you're seeing, as well as any Virtualmin software updates.

You may want to talk to your ISP -- if they're the ones blocking the site, you may need to work with them to figure out how to access it again.

Hi Eric,

I'm on linode.com. What shall I look for? You think it's a firewall thing?

What check should I do?

Thanks for your insights.

Hmm, yeah, Linode wouldn't be blocking the software repository.

It could possibly be a firewall running on your system though... what does this command output:

iptables -L -n

iptables -L -n gives quiet big data chains.

Just saw that when I look in the Webmin Congiguration -> Blocked Hosts and Users

I get: HTTP/1.0 500 Perl execution failed Server: MiniServ/1.562 Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2011 19:40:08 GMT Content-type: text/html Connection: close Error - Perl execution failed

Can't use an undefined value as a symbol reference at ./webmin-lib.pl line 1763.

Maybe this is connected? I'm just reading http://www.virtualmin.com/node/18936

Well, you seem to be running into an issue deeper than just Webmin or Virtualmin at the moment... even from the command line, you're unable to access the Virtualmin software site.

That's unusual :-)

I just verified from a Linode-based VPS that software.virtualmin.com is accessible.

Which city is your Linode data center in, do you know? The one I tested is in Newark, NJ.

Dear Eric,

thank you very much for looking into this with me. The cause seems to be somewhere else indeed.

To resolve it swiftly, I switched image on the linode. All is working.

Best regards,

Alex

That's a strange problem you were seeing, but I'm glad it's working now!
