Adding a further IP address

Hi guys

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction with this - I've been playing with it for around 3 hours now and I keep going around in circles.

I have 7 IP addresses assigned to my server and they are used like this:

  1. default IP for the server and all shared virtual servers

2-5. nameserver addresses (x 4)

6 & 7. new IPs not currently in use but they need to be!

OK, so I've tried a few different methods of adding the latter IP addresses to my server...

I've added them via Virtualmin by assigning them to a virtual server both using the Server Config > Change IP Address option and the Services > Configure Website > Virtual Server Details option.

I've also added them via Webmin using the Networking > Network Config > Network Interfaces and then heading back over to Virtualmin to assign the IP to virtual server using both of the above options.

No matter which method I use, I end up with the same result. When I enter the IP address into a browser, I get the default 'It Works' page served, however when I enter the domain of the Virtual Server that I have assigned the IP to, it serves the 'default' website for the server instead of the intended site.

I've hit the proverbial 'dead end' with this and I'm hoping that someone can help me out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Howdy,

No matter which method I use, I end up with the same result. When I enter the IP address into a browser, I get the default 'It Works' page served, however when I enter the domain of the Virtual Server that I have assigned the IP to, it serves the 'default' website (http://impelling.co.uk) for the server instead of the intended site

Well, it's actually possible what you're seeing is just DNS being cached.

If you have the domain "example.com" setup on your server, with the IP "x.x.x.x", and you browse to that IP, that DNS lookup becomes cached on your ISP's server.

So, if you were to change the IP address for example.com to "y.y.y.y", although it's been correctly changed, since your ISP has that old IP address cached, your browser may take you to the wrong site.

Do you have the ability to try this from a different computer (and ISP)? The page might work perfectly for someone else.

These DNS issues usually clear up within a day or two.

Thanks for the reply Eric

I don't believe that this is the issue as the change between the default It Works page and the website that I've set as the server's default site is instant when I make the change. I'm not at my machine right now as it's just gone midnight but I'll try leaving the setting in place for longer tomorrow and see how I get on. My TTL for dns is set to just 20 mins right now during the initial setup phase so it shouldn't take long to test this out

Cheers again

FIXED!

You were right Eric, after leaving it for the 20 minutes all is fixed and working.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

yes, thank you Eric.

I do have another kind of unrelated problem, which I've written about here that I'm still struggling with...

Cheers
