Login Troubles need help asap

Hi i am having a bit of a strange problem here, when i point my browser to my webmin / virtualmin control panel https on port 10000 via the internal Lan IP address i can log in fine but if i point my browser to the public IP address or the domain name using https on port 10000 i can connect and get the login page but i cant login, it sits there waiting for a response from the server but thats all it does. can anyone help me and tell me what i may have missed.

Check out the log and see what it says:

mike, try to log in to Webmin using another connection (e.g. dial-up or someone else's computer+connection or through a web proxy) to see if it makes a difference.

I have tried to run a test server on my home network before. Because my router does not allow loopback, I can never browse my domain name or public IP on the test server. I had to use a web proxy (get from http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html ). Anyone outside my home network could view the websites though.

AH is right on this one. This is a very common flaw in consumer level "routers". Mine does it too, much to my irritation Might be worth checking to see if it can be accessed by outside hosts.

There is no other port needed (except for RPC, but that has no bearing on web access) than 10000.

from that you can see that the domain is novexhost.com the hostname is srv1, i have tried all of the following access routes

https://<privateip>:10000/ this connects loads and is able to login at a fast rate
https://<publicip>:10000/ this connects loads the login page but hangs and waits durring the login
https://srv1.novexhost.com:10000/ same as above
https://www.novexhost.com:10000/ same as above

so what i am seeing is that it hangs and waits durring the login process only when i use a public access route, but if i use a private access route then it works properly

Not sure what to make of that, though I do know the "Address already in use" error indicates that Webmin wasn't actually stopped while restarting. This means that Webmin failed to shut it down the first time, but still wrote a new PID (this is a bit of a race condition in the Webmin initscript, that probably ought to be fixed). So, no attempts to restart are actually restarting, because the original process is not being killed.

Try the following:

killall miniserv.pl

And then restart Webmin. This will also kill your Usermin, so you'll need to restart it, too.

could this also have something to do with the server haveing a private IP? the machine sites behind a router with port 10000 forwarded over to it. are there other ports that need to be forwarded over for webmin? or is it something that needs to be done in the config files for webmin?

ok so i have tried restarting everything and that doesnt work, i still get the login screen useing both access routes, i can login fine without problems if i use the private IP address but if i use the public ip address or the domain name then i cant login, my browser just sits there waiting, webmin is running on UBUNTU 6.06.1LTS Server with 1GB Ram, does anybody have any suggestions of what i can do to fix this problem?

Lots of errors there....

Failed to initialize SSL connection <----- no SSL connections whihch means you can't use HTTPS ---- do you have the perl module installed?

[06/Jul/2007:00:17:22 -0600] [192.168.0.104] /bind8/edit_.cgi : File not found Error: '' is not a valid email address <--- Invalid email address for the SOA admin most likely.

Error: Cannot write to directory <--- This error means it can't write a directory so check permissions.

i have just temporarly disabled ssl on the control panel and i found that i can now login from the public IP / domain name, but unfortunatly the side panel doesnt load, but if i use a private IP then the sidebar will load, any one with any new ideas about this problem of mine?

To connect though a web proxy on MS Internet Explorer...

> Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings > Proxy server > *tick checkbox & enter proxy IP and port

right now i have it temporarly fixed no SSL though but it only opened a double standard on the system, if i load it up now with a subdomain like www attached to the domain name then once i am loged in the sidebar down the left wont load up but if i log in via the domain without anything attached to the subdomain slot then everything works just dandy.

Actually this kinda sounds like maybe a DNS issue. Maybe. Kinda. It's not something I've ever seen before, anyway. ;-)

If you'd like to send over the hostname and some login details (probably don't need root to see what's happening here, but might want it if I see an obvious way to fix it) to me via email, I'll drop in and have a look.

ok so i played around with things, rebooted the machine, etc. etc. now i have it working properly via http://www.novexhost.com:10000/ as well as http://novexhost.com:10000/ but if enable SSL and point my browser to https://www.novexhost.com:10000/ then things dont want to work properly for me. my domain is hosted on the nameservers of domain registrar.

there i just setup a demo user so you could test what is happening, you can use any of the urls above with the login name "virt" and the password "demo" it is set in demo mode as an enduser

Howdy Mike,

You've got a router problem. I'm able to login and poke around just fine. Everything looks reasonably zippy and everything does appear when I hit it via https.

You'll need to keep hitting the private IP from inside, and the public IP from outside...or get a router that can do actual, you know, routing. You're not alone, my router here at the house sucks, too. ;-)

oh darn, well the machine you connected to earlier this evening is actually behind 2 routers a "D-Link 604" which i am assuming is the problem and an "SMC Barracade Wireless Router" which i dont have any of these routing problems. so thanks for testing it for me, i will have a look around at the computer shop as soon as i can afford to purchase one.
